Having watched a wide variety of Luxembourg films this year, I thought I’d give my list of the best… in my opinion anyway.

2010 has been quite a year for Luxembourg produced and co-produced films, in fact I count 14 films this year, more than 1 a month! Quite outstanding when you consider that film funding in the country has recently been cut.

From what I’ve seen this year the quality has been outstanding with several films that remain in my mind as some of the best I’ve seen this year entirely – honestly!

Emil, Trouble No More, Deuxieme Etage Gauche Gauche, Mir Wëllen Net Bleiwen, Illégal are examples of some great films that hit the Luxembourg box office this year, but three films in particular, all totally different from each other, stood out in my mind:

Schockela Knätschgummi a brong Puppelcher (Chocolate, Chewing Gum & Brown babies) by Andy Bausch – An interesting peak at the months following Luxembourg’s liberation at the hands of the American GI’s.
* RocDoc by Govinda Van Maele – a fly-on-the-wall documentary following four of Luxembourg’s rock groups, providing a unique and clever window on the Luxembourg music scene.
* And my top Luxembourg film award for 2010 goes to the Luxembourg-Canadian co-production film “La Dernière Fugue” (The last escape) by Lyse Lafontaine et Nicolas Steil. An absolutely beautiful and emotion-filled film broaching the difficult and complex subject euthanasia. Sounds depressing but believe me it’s an outstanding film.

I’m eager and ready for more great Luxembourg productions in 2011!
