Discovery Zone, Luxembourg City Film Festival unveils the threadline of its Young Audiences Programme, as well as the names of 2 of its 2014 guests: JULIE GAYET (President of the International Jury) and LUC DARDENNE (Scriptwriting Masterclass). The full Festival programme will be disclosed on the 5th of February.

Julie Gayet, President of the International Jury
The French actress and producer – who was initially spotted by Kieslowski and acted for Varda and Bouhnik – knows Luxembourg quite well since she worked here for several films.

Luc Dardenne in Masterclass
One of the few directors to have won twice the “Palme d’Or” in Cannes with his brother Jean-Pierre, LUC DARDENNE will do us the favour to give an exceptionnal Masterclass.

New in 2014: the Youth Jury
For the first time in Luxembourg, a jury of school pupils, the youth jury, will analyse and judge the selected films alongside the professional jury before awarding the “Youth Jury Prize” at the festival’s closing ceremony. The goal is to promote young talents by encouraging them to share their tastes and shine a light on their creativity and their faculty of analysis.

What you can expect: short films for the 3-5 year olds, an animation film in luxembourgish, the Brothers Lumière at the Crazy Cinématographe for KIDS, some fiction and amazing documentaries.

The adventures of the russian kids’ mascot CHEBURASHKA and those of the cheerful characters SPOT AND SLODGE will guarantee a joyful first contact with the magic world of movies with MY FIRST CINEMA.

The national production will be under the spotlights with the animation film: MY MOMMY IS IN AMERICA AND SHE MET BUFFALO BILL, co-produced by Studio 352 and – in avant-premiere – dubbed in Luxembourgish. The seadfast Crazy Cinématographe for KIDS will present a totally renewed content, through a selection of the works from the Lumière Brothers. Their elders will, among other surprises, attend the aesthetically peculiar Japanese animation film, THE WOLF CHILDREN AME AND YUKI, the Czech DER BLAUE TIGER, and a tribute to British football with BELIEVE.

Teenagers will experience a rush of adrenalin with THE CRASH REEL, a touching documentary by Lucy Walker on snowboarder Kevin Pierce; but also the unprecedented DANCING IN JAFFA of Hilla Medalia, imagining Palestininan and Israeli kids dancing toghether. The same director will present, in European Premiere, WEB JUNKIE, a stunning journey in the first chinese detention facility for teenagers addicted to the Internet. FREIER FALL, the German “Brokeback Mountain”, SHORT TERM 12 but also meet-and-greet sessions with Pierre Dulaine (main character of DANCING IN JAFFA) and director Hilla Medalia.

A set of diverse collaborations and workshops thanks to the cultural institutions and the professional audiovisual scene

Cultural institutions team up with the Festival to present a Cine-Show, HANSEL & GRETEL, a play from Compagnie La Cordonnerie in the CarréRotondes, and a VIDEO ART session with Jeff Kieffer at Casino Luxembourg – Forum d’Art Contemporain. The 8-12 year olds will solve the mysteries of special effects throughout the History of cinema during the workshop THE LITTLE SECRETS OF SPECIAL EFFECTS, in relation with HOLORAMA, this edition’s exhibition at the Ratskeller.

Studio 352 will again contribute with 2 workshops around the past and current works of its history. NAKOfx and Espera Productions will organize a workshop on 3D animation techniques.
Young audiences will also enjoy again the succesful events of past editions: CRÈME FRAÎCHE, a scriptwriting and clip contest; MEET THE PROS, an information afternoon on jobs in the film industry, and PITCH DISCOVERY, a scriptwriting workshop.

New Exhibition at the Festival Headquarters, RATSKELLER

Inspired by the great tradition of optical theatre, director Jeff Desom decided to bring several iconic scenes from the history of cinema back to life. From Twin Peaks to Apocalypse Now, from E.T. to The Big Lebowski via Jason and the Argonauts, Desom has given these famous moments a third dimension using a clever holographic process based on a semi-transparent screen, mixing the image of an extremely faithfully built model with the characters extracted from the original scene. A new perspective and a great tribute, open from the 27th of February till the 23rd of March to all ages.

Save the date: February 5th, to discover the full 2014 programme (Luxembourg selection, Official Film and Documentary Competition, Outside the Walls programme, guests…).
