Human Rights Watch Closing Night Film Screening and Reception

Published by at 14:00 under Events & Projects

The Closing Night of this year’s Human Rights Watch Film Festival is on Friday, March 4, 2011.

There will be a reception at 5:30pm at Upper Lavish (253 Queen Street West, just 2 blocks west of University Avenue), followed by a screening of this year’s final festival film at 8:00pm at the TIFF Lightbox (a 5 minute walk from Upper Lavish).

The festival’s final film this year is ILLEGAL [Belguim/France/Luxembourg, 2010] about the plight of illegal immigrants in Europe.

ILLÉGAL
Director: Olivier Masset-Depasse,
Belgium/France/Luxemburg 2010, 85m

Living in constant fear as an illegal immigrant in Belgium, thirty-nine-year-old Byelorussian mother Tania (Anna Coesens) is forced to conceal her identity (including a painful physical disfigurement) to protect herself and her young son from the imminent threat of deportation. Dodging both the local authorities and the Russian crime rings that prey on those who are sans-papiers, Tania reaches a crisis when she is caught and sent to a detention centre housing illegals from all over the globe. Using a moving personal story to illustrate a pressing international issue, Olivier Masset-Depasse\’s film is a timely and disturbing portrait of the plight of refugees in an increasingly fortified Europe.

The cost to attend both the reception AND the film screening is only $35. Refreshments and light snacks will be served at the reception.

It will be a fun evening in support of a great organization and its important work. Please find below more details about the film, the reception, as well as info on ticket purchase.
