Avant-garde and Advertising – Hans Richter’s Corporate Films in the 1930s (by Dr. Yvonne Zimmermann, in English)

In collaboration with: Medienwissenschaft / Universität Trier and Cinémathèque suisse

“Hans Richter is considered as one of the most renowned film avant-garde artists of the 1920s. Born in Berlin in 1888, Richter was a major force in the development of the abstract cinema (absoluter Film). His Rhythmus studies (1921-1925) as well as his later surrealist films (i.e. Vormittagsspuk 1928) belong to canonical film history. Hardly known however is the series of corporate films Richter directed in the Netherlands and in Switzerland after fleeing Nazi Germany in 1933. The lecture presents, for the first time in Luxembourg, three recently rediscovered and restored Richter films from the late 1930s. Commissioned by Swiss corporations and associations, the films promote the malt drink Ovaltine, an air show, and the stock exchange trading. Today, they shed new light on the close intersections of avant-garde, advertising, and documentary traditions.” (Yvonne Zimmermann)
