Director Adolf El Assal’s first ever feature film The Notorious Guys (Les Gars) is finally here, and you’re in for a surprise! A fun and exciting adventure, this story will take you places you’ve never been before and show you the lives of a curious group of francophone people in a very comical light!

My rating: ★★★ 1/2

Steven is a 23-year old special needs pupil living in Luxembourg, and one day he is awarded the opportunity to visit and explore his homeland, Portugal, with his class and friends. Prepared, with a large sum of money on their hands, Steven and two buddies escape the tedious excursions and run off on a search for exhilarating experiences. Unfortunately, things don’t go quite as planned and they end up in very big trouble; that’s when Steven’s classmate Guy-Désiré appears and, having conquered the heart of the woman of his dreams, sets out to save his friends’ asses.

The Notorious Guys is in fact a feature film based on an earlier successful short by the same director, called The Notorious Road. Both works deliver an incredibly entertaining story that is powered by a fun and abstract plot, a well written script, excellent cinematography and SFX and, of course, the cast’s fantastic performances. One wouldn’t ever even guess that this movie’s director has only just entered the realm of feature films, as every aspect of his piece seems to be exceptionally well thought-through – clearly, every person working on the set of this film was nothing less than a dedicated professional. With regards to plot and story, The Notorious Guys could most likely be compared to films like The Hangover – those that tell a humorous tale about a bunch of guys and an adventure gone wrong. (…That said, I don’t know that many films of that type of comedy, so I don’t have much to relate this experience to!) All in all, I promise that you won’t be bored! Just make sure you keep an eye out for Guy-Désiré – this character will leave you in tears from laughter! It’s quite a shame, though that the film is in French, as a lot of its audience will have to watch it will subtitles, and subtitles do make it a little harder to properly convey the humour to the viewers and have it feel as genuine as in the original language.

The film is scheduled to be released on all major VOD platforms on 11th December 2013, so if you’re interested and want to know more about director El Assal’s first feature piece, you can follow The Notorious Guys on Tugg or support it on Ulule (the money donated will be used in order to dub the film into various languages – more importantly, English – in order for it to be able to reach a much wider audience.
