Filming started at the beginning of this month in Luxembourg on the Irish-Luxembourg co-production The Runway, the first feature of Irish short film director Ian Power.

The film is inspired by he true story of a South American pilot (Demian Bichir, Fidel Castro in Soderbergh’s The Argentine) who crashed his cargo plane into a field in Ireland in 1983. Against all odds, the people of a nearby town came together to build a runway to get him home again, briefly catching the imagination of the nation.

The story, written by Power, is seen through the eyes of 9-year-old Paco (Jamie Kierans), who lives alone with his mother (Kerry Condon) and who thinks his dad is a Spanish astronaut working for N.A.S.A. Having taught himself some Spanish in case he dad might return, he is the only one from the village who can translate what the pilot says.

The film recently wrapped the Luxembourg leg of the shoot, where interiors were filmed. Cast and crew are currently relocating to Ireland to complete filming on location.

Crew includes director of photography PJ Dillon, editor Amine Jaber, production designer Ray Ball and costume designer Uli Simon.

The film is produced by Macdara Kelleher and Brendan MacDonald for Irish outfit Fastnet Films and Bernard Michaux for Luxembourg production company Lucil Film.

The film is expected to hit screens in 2010.
