At Utopolis-Kirchberg yesterday evening, Laurent Witz of Zeilt Productions presented the premier of the new Luxembourg short animated film, Mr Hublot.

The 12-minute film took 3 years to make. It had an initial screening at the Discovery Zone Film Festival in the spring when it was unfinished. It now has a proper soundtrack and all the animation sequences have been completed.

The story is of a man with obsessive compulsive disorder who lives in an industrialised city. All characters are made of steel and leather and each are distinctive in shape, movement and dress, with gadgets galore. He rescues a dog and brings it into his apartment which interrupts his routine…

Before the screening, a surprise video from Tim Johnson of Dreamworks Animation was shown. In it, he complmented Laurent Witz by sayign he “has put something rather extraordinary on screen. It’s a soulful film”. He added “The film is one of the most astonishing to come out of animation in many years”.

Those involved in the production explained how they created the caharacters, then the decor (both the industrial exterior and the apartment’s interior, including the bedroom and office), as well as the graphic style. The location was based on Paris and Antwerp.

The 3D version was then screened, and was followed by a performance of the songs in the soundtrack.

Let’s hope the people behind this project, Laurent Witz and Zeilt Productions, will attract the finance to create more adventures for Mr Hublot. The audience is already waiting…
